EDC Awards Innovation Company of the Year to Structural Composites

Structural Composites has achieved huge innovations for transportation industry.
 

Space Coast, FL (May 10, 2018) – At the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast’s (EDC) 5th Annual Made In Brevard Expo, Structural Composites was awarded the 2018 Innovation Company of the Year Award.

Innovative individuals and organizations drive the economy. The Innovation Company of the Year Honorable Mention recognizes a rapidly growing company that has experienced robust growth over the past few years. The company with 100 or fewer employees will have demonstrated innovation in one or more of the following areas in the past year: product or service offerings, manufacturing processes or productivity, and/or sales and marketing approach resulting in increased revenue and profitability.

Structural Composites has achieved a huge in-road for composites into the transportation industry. Recently, Wabash National, the largest manufacturer of semi-trailers in the nation, called for a trailer that was lighter, more durable, better performing and cost effective. Structural Composites employed a combination of advanced composite engineering, PRISMA preform technology and CoCure resin systems, and brought the cost of composite structures down to the cost of aluminum to meet the needs of Wabash National.

By incorporating molded structural composites instead of aluminum, Wabash improved the trailer’s overall thermal performance by up to 25 percent. The trailer’s floor is also up to 20 percent lighter than it would be with steel, and the system is far more puncture- and damage-resistant than conventional constructions.

“Structural Composites’ work truly encompasses innovation,” said Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the EDC. “Their recent accomplishment for Wabash National is an excellent example of a disruptive design that is made right here in Brevard County.”
